Patrick Kilgannon isn’t just the owner of Custom Air Conditioning & Air Quality LLC in Zephyrhills, Florida; he is known around town as a local HVAC expert. While many companies focus on “box-swapping” in new construction, Patrick Kilgannon has spent over 34 years in the trenches of mechanical systems, mastering the high-stakes art of the Residential Retrofit. He specializes in the surgical integration of 21st-century energy-efficient systems into existing homes and custom new construction. Patrick does this by providing good energy and heat load calculations with proper-sized duct work, leading to lower humidity and clean, comfortable, energy-efficient air. “Between the initial ductwork not being done with good calculations and homeowners using the wrong air filters, not changing air filters, and not getting the proper maintenance done on their units, I see new systems failing in 5 to 7 years when they should be lasting at least 10 to 12 years.”

Known for his “Whole-Home” philosophy, Patrick doesn’t just look at the air conditioner; he analyzes the building envelope for proper sizing of equipment and ductwork design. “A lot of contractors sell these new energy-efficient units, and they don’t do any duct work. They just swap out the unit, not looking at the house and what it truly needs. But when homeowners want to put in a good energy-efficient system, it’s important to change the duct work, or at least make some modifications, to make everything function properly. Otherwise, they’re not getting the full energy use out of their new unit.”
